How Early Can One Get a Screening for Autism?
When it comes to autism, early detection changes everything.
The earlier we understand a child’s unique way of interacting with the world, the sooner we can provide the support, tools, and compassion they need to thrive. For families of color and immigrant communities, however, access to early screening is often delayed—leaving many children misunderstood or mislabeled.
At Path2Growth, we’re here to change that.
So, How Early Can You Screen for Autism?
Autism can be reliably screened as early as 18 months, and in some cases, signs can be detected around 12 months of age. While a formal diagnosis may come later (often around age 2–3), early developmental screenings help catch red flags before they become challenges in school or social life.
Some early signs include:
Limited eye contact
Delayed speech or language development
Repetitive movements or intense interest in specific topics
Lack of response to their name
Differences in play or social interaction
These signs don’t mean something is “wrong”—they are invitations to pay closer attention.
Why Early Screening Matters—Especially in BIPOC and Immigrant Families
Unfortunately, many Black and Brown children are diagnosed much later than their peers—or misdiagnosed with behavioral or mood disorders instead. Immigrant families may not know early signs of autism or may fear stigma, judgment, or being misunderstood when seeking help.
Delays in screening mean delays in services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, or school supports. It can also increase frustration at home, where caregivers may feel like they’re doing something wrong.
We want you to know this: You are not alone, and your concerns are valid.
