Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need therapy?

If your symptoms or concerns are significantly impacting your mental health to the point where you are having difficulty functioning at work, school, or in the community and/or severely impacting your relationship with yourself/others, then you should seek the help of a mental health professional. If you have questions or reservations about therapy, you can request a free 15-minute consultation where Dr. Toussaint can answer or discuss any questions you may have about starting the therapy process.

How do I know if I (or my child) needs a psychological (or psychoeducational) evaluation?

The answer to this question is simply: it depends on many factors. The best way to find out if you need an evaluation is to schedule a free 15-minute consultation with Dr. Toussaint where you can assess whether you or your child need a psychological evaluation for school, work, etc.

How long will our therapy sessions be?

The first intake appointment session is around 55-60 minutes. After that, sessions are typically 45-50 minutes long. If you require longer sessions because of the severity of your mental health concerns, we can prolong therapy sessions to 60 minutes. Depending on the presenting problems, our therapy treatment programs can effectively treat trauma, anxiety, grief, and other behavioral issues with 16-20 therapy sessions. This may vary depending on the complexity and severity of the mental health diagnosis. Some treatment programs may take longer.

If my child or teen is in therapy, do I need to be in attendance?

Depending on the severity of the presenting problems, we highly recommend that parents attend the first intake appointment and the last 15 minutes of therapy sessions. The point of therapy is to learn coping techniques to help you improve your mental health and thrive. It is essential that parents are on the same page as the treating provider and are able to help their child practice their coping skills at home throughout the week.

Are sessions in person or virtual?

Currently sessions are virtual. We provide a link that is sent to your email. You can join via laptop or phone. We will be transitioning to in-person individual and group therapy sessions in the Fall of 2021. All CDC and state COVID-19 guidelines will be strictly followed. Upon reopening, therapy clients will have the choice to be in-person or telehealth. All psychological evaluations will be conducted in person. If an evaluation does not warrant an in-person visit, then it will be conducted via telehealth.

If I am in another state, can I still see a therapist at Path2Growth?

All therapists at P2G are licensed and only allowed to practice in NY. Even if the session is virtual, we are not allowed to see you if you reside outside of NY. If you are out-of-state, please reach out to your insurance directory for a therapist in your area/state.

Do you take insurance?

Yes, we take the following insurances: Aetna, United Healthcare, Oxford Health Plans, Oscar, and Optum. Please note that not all insurance companies cover psychological evaluations.

I don’t see my insurance listed, what are my options?

You can pay out-of-pocket for therapy services. If you have out-of-network benefits with your insurance plan, you may be able to get reimbursed. We provide monthly superbills that can be submitted to your insurance for reimbursement, if your insurance allows. Call your provider for more information.

What’s the youngest age you treat or evaluate at Path2Growth?

We provide psychological evaluations for children over the age of 3 and see children over the age of 5 for therapy services.

Are there mental health issues that Path2Growth does not treat?

Unfortunately, we are not able to take on every case. Please note that we do not treat the following issues: Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders such as Anorexia, Schizophrenia, and severe cases that may require day treatment programs.

Can Dr. Toussaint prescribe medication?

Dr. Toussaint is a psychologist and not a psychiatrist, a medical doctor who can prescribe medication for mental health issues. However, we are able to consult and work with your psychiatrist as part of your treatment program, if you request.

“I cannot thank Dr. Toussaint enough! She was the first person to identify that my son had Autism after years and years of testing from the school and other doctors. During the feedback session, she sat me down and explained everything. Dr. T gave me the tools I needed to advocate for my son. It’s been such a relief. My son is thriving! This evaluation really helped us!”
